Professor Alex Smirnov has been named to the Governor Robert W. Scott Distinguished Professorship. This professorship was established in 2007 by UNC President Emeritus C.D. Spangler Jr. through the C.D. Spangler Foundation.

Melanie Chestnut from Smirnov group received $500 travel award to attend an International Conference on Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Imaging of Biological Systems (EPR-2017) in Morgantown, WV on July 16–July 22, 2017. This 5-day conference was a combined meeting of the “16th In Vivo EPR Spectroscopy and Imaging” and the “13th Spin Trapping/Spin Labeling” conferences.

During the conference, Melanie received an “Award of Excellence” in the best poster competition for her presentation on “Profiling local water concentration in membranes and proteins down to 2 Å spatial resolution by HYSCORE spectroscopy of nitroxide spin labels.” She was awarded a certificate and $400 cash prize. Congratulations, Melanie!
